Our Story

A genuine Worcester Lunch Car that has fed Charlton from behind the same long counter for the better part of a century.

The Yankee Diner is an original Worcester Lunch Car, one of the barrel-roofed, porcelain-and-stainless dining cars hand-built in Worcester, Massachusetts, back when a hot breakfast and a cup of coffee were how a day got started.

It has stood along Route 20 in Charlton for the better part of a century, feeding travelers and neighbors from behind the same long counter. It has carried a few different names and more than a few owners, and it even went quiet for a stretch.

The little diner that refused to disappear is still here, and still cooking everything from scratch. Pull up a stool and you are not just getting breakfast. You are sitting inside a piece of New England history.

The Diner Itself

The building is not a reproduction. It is a genuine Worcester Lunch Car, the classic New England diner form.

  • Hand-built in Worcester Made by the Worcester Lunch Car Company, which crafted roughly 651 dining cars between 1906 and 1957.
  • One of the older survivors Most sources date our car to 1939, which puts it among the oldest of its kind still serving food.
  • Thirty-two seats The barrel roof, porcelain-enamel panels, wooden booths and a counter lined with stools are all hallmarks of the builder.
  • A Route 20 roadside stop Sited on Worcester Road in Charlton, near the Sturbridge junction of the Mass Pike and I-84.

Like many dining cars, this one has been moved and renamed several times. These are the names it has carried.

  1. Today

    Yankee Diner

    Breakfast and lunch, made from scratch, Tuesday through Sunday.

  2. Around 2014

    J&E's Yankee Diner

    The original hardware, porcelain, barstools and icebox were restored, and the diner ran BYOB dinners on Friday nights.

  3. 2011

    The New Yankee Diner

    Reopened by two brothers, cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients.

  4. By 2008

    Quiet

    The diner sat vacant for a stretch, its original neon sign resting in the woods behind the building.

  5. Mid 1900s

    Bob's Yankee Diner

    Documented by the Library of Congress in its Historic American Buildings Survey. It also traded for a time as Plouffe's Yankee Diner.

  6. 1939

    Built in Worcester

    Hand-crafted by the Worcester Lunch Car Company and sent out to the roadside.
